A great example of Communities working together
The Bangladeshi Islamic Centre has thanked the Sandwell Irish Society
for raising over £136 for the Bangladeshi cyclone appeal.
The money was raised at a party organised by the
Sandwell Irish Society.
Mohammed Faruque, BIC Youth Outreach Worker said, “We are thankful to
the Irish Society for their support.” He added, “The efforts of the
Sandwell Irish Society are a testament to the friendship between our
communities and our efforts to work together to achieve
community cohesion.”
Abdul Subhan was impresses with the concern the Irish people showed for those thousands in distress in Bangladesh as they did not know them nor were they from the same community. He said, “ Most of the people who donated were pensioners answering a call for humanity at the time of great need.” He also pointed out that, this was true community cohesion in action. The difference of race, colour, culture and continent did not have a slightest hindrance in the kind donations given by the Irish people. People in need thousands of miles away enough to appeal to the many pensioners present at the party to part with their money for those more in need. The cyclone, which hit in November 2007, left more than 3,000 people dead and many homeless. Efforts to assist the victims are ongoing.
