A New Opportunity for Learning
Family Learning
Learning Together Project
Bangladeshi and Pakistani school children are underachieving and are not
performing as well as their counterparts. This is despite the fact that
their families value education highly and expect them to gain worthwhile
qualifications.
With this disparity in mind, the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre has launched a
Lottery-funded programme to encourage parents to take an active role in
their children’s education and development. Learning Together project
officers, Rothna and Irfan, will deliver fun learning sessions to families
to encourage creativity, foster understanding and promote family
bonding. Above all the sessions will allow families to work and learn
together.
The Bangladeshi Islamic Centre has been involved in issues that face the
local Bangladeshi and other communities for over 20 years. Our attempt to
encourage learning within Bangladeshi and Pakistani families complements
our other activities which include organizing regular youth activities,
religious education, and a regular homework club. We now want to encourage
a recognition of the importance of mainstream education and its ability to
raise general living standards.
