Free Homework Club

From January 2009 the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre will be holding free after-school tuition Homework Club to help local children with Maths and English at Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and GCSE level. The club will be held every week after school time and will take place at the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre on Lewisham Road.

We have qualified staff who can assist children with Literacy & Numeracy, 11 Plus tests and coursework. Sessions for KS2, KS3 and GCSE will be held on different days and separate sessions will be held for boys and girls.

To register your interest please obtain a registration form from the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre or from our website www.bicentre.org.uk. Please return completed forms on 12th January 2009. For more information please contact me on 0121 558 8204 or email abdulsubhan@bicentre.org.uk .

Spaces at the homework club are limited to 10 people per session. So please register early. Once we have received your completed forms we will contact you to let you know the days and times when your child can attend the homework club.

Learning Together Project

Bangladeshi and Pakistani school children are underachieving and are not

performing as well as their counterparts. This is despite the fact that

their families value education highly and expect them to gain worthwhile

qualifications.

With this disparity in mind, the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre has launched a

Lottery-funded programme to encourage parents to take an active role in

Stop smoking success for Mr. Rahman

Mr. Shafiqur Rahman, a 75 year-old former heavy smoker is celebrating ‘healthy living’ after successfully kicking the habit with the help of his Community Health Development Worker Alamgir Khandoker. His success came after been encouraged by the health worker, to attend monthly stop smoking sessions at the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre in Smethwick funded by the Sandwell Primary Care Trust.

Speaking about his former 20-a-day habit, Mr. Rahman said: “I started smoking when I was 10 years old, so after 65 years of smoking, I’m relieved to say that I haven’t had a cigarette for over five months. Initially, I found it quite difficult to give up. I gained weight, and had to deal with high temper, but that has settled now and I’m back down to my normal weight.” (Read on …)
